When Should You Surrender at Blackjack?

When Should You Surrender at Blackjack

When playing online gambling games, the thought of surrender is rarely considered. No one wants to give up. Yet, it can be a beneficial strategy to know when to surrender in blackjack during a game.

Surrendering allows you to exit the current hand and only lose half of the wager; and not the total bet. This means that you can enjoy more hands, as you aren’t losing full wagers the whole time.

We aim to provide our fellow Norwegians with a safe and reliable Norsk casino so that you can enjoy online gambling from anywhere.

Our expert, Alexandra Nereng, provides in-depth information on these topics. You can view her profile here. Find out all you need to know about surrendering in blackjack before you develop your strategy.

Different Ways to Surrender in Blackjack and When to Use Them

There are different blackjack games in every casino, as it remains a popular online game. Each casino has its own set of rules and amount of decks used in the game. Each casino also decides what the dealer (croupier) can do on a soft 17 and even if surrendering is allowed.

Not all casinos allow surrendering, so you must check the tables’ blackjack surrender rules.

There are a few different ways you can relinquish your hand. We will cover these different ways and when to use them below.

Early Surrender

An early surrender allows you to give up your cards if the croupier shows a 10 or an ace. This is done before the dealer checks to see if they have blackjack. Even if the dealer has blackjack, you have already conceded and only lost half of your wager.

Early surrender isn’t something that all blackjack games allow as it improves the return to player (RTP). However, if you can find a game that allows early surrender, it’s a good one to join.

Although this way of conceding offers you some security, there are still cases when you shouldn’t give up your hand.

Only concede if the dealer has an ace and you have any of the following:

  • A pair of three, six, seven, or eight
  • A total between five and seven
  • A total between 12 and 17

Only concede if the dealer has a ten and you have any of the following:

  • A pair of sevens or eights (only surrender on a pair of eights in a single deck game)
  • A total between 14 and 16

Late Surrender

In a blackjack game that allows late surrendering, you can toss your hand when the croupier checks his cards for blackjack. If he has blackjack, you cannot yield. But if he doesn’t, you can and lighten your loss.

You should only consider giving up your hand if you have 14, 15, or 16.

When Not to Surrender

Just as it’s essential to know in blackjack when to surrender, you should also know when not to concede. There are times when the croupier has a 10, and you might consider abandoning your hand. However, there are certain situations when you shouldn’t surrender as your hand might still win.

Do not surrender if the dealer has a 10 and you have one of the following:

  • A total of 14
  • A pair of 8’s in a double-deck game

Conclusion

Knowing when to surrender in blackjack can be a precious strategy. Making use of this rule can save you money. This means that you could have a longer and more enjoyable game of blackjack. Make sure to look for a blackjack game that allows surrendering and try out some of these recommendations.
