How To Pick The Perfect Bottle Of Wine

How to pick the perfect wine

Many of us enjoy a glass of wine or two, but how many of us really know how to choose the perfect one? Thousands and thousands of bottles line the shelf with a variety of red, white, and rose. Some are as sweet; some are dry. Some of them are full-bodied. Some of them are smooth. Some are fruity. How do you know which one to combine with that delicious pasta dish or a piece of super fresh fish? It can sometimes seem a little daunting, and occasionally challenging, but it can be easy to select the perfect bottle of wine for any occasion. Here are some tips to make you look like a wine buff in next to no time!

Have you talked to the experts? The first port of call should be someone who works for an independent wine store. Don’t feel intimidated by them -their job is to help you pick the right wine. Talk to them about the occasion or meal that you want to pair with your wine, your likes and dislikes, and, most importantly, the budget that you are working with. They will be able to tell you the most delicious food to pair with Roero Arneis or the wine that you need to go with your Christmas dinner.

What is your personal preference? It’s also important to remember that each type of wind has a very distinctive taste, and this is due to the grapes used to make it. Experiment a little to find out which sort you prefer because, ultimately, what really matters is your own personal preference. If you do want to break the rules when it comes to wine and food combos, go for it!

Have you heard of the brand? Many people choose to go for brands or wines that they have heard of, and there is nothing wrong with that. After all, there is a reason why some are better known than others – it’s either because they are spectacularly bad and you know to avoid, or pretty good.  Don’t be afraid to go for a popular choice; no one will look down on you for it.

Are you judging by price? Wines can vary in price massively, from just a few quid for a bottle to some vintage ones costing hundreds or even thousands of pounds. We are all conditioned to think that the more expensive the wine, the better it is, but actually, there are some pretty good budget ones out there. In fact, some of the more expensive ones are sometimes a little too challenging to drink for the average wine drinker – acquired taste comes to mind!

Choosing a bottle of wine can be as complicated or as easy as you want it to be. The best bet, especially if you are hosting dinner parties, is to ask someone who knows their stuff, but if you just want a good bottle of wine to enjoy now and then experiment and find one you like.
