Six Ways To Make Money In The City, Fast

Make Money In The City

Living in a city can be exciting but it can also be expensive, with living costs likely to be higher than elsewhere, not to mention the cost of making the most of all those opportunities for eating out and entertainment.

Luckily, the city gives you plenty of possibilities to make money fast, even if it’s not a tourist destination. It’s full of busy people, many who are also trying to watch their spending, so a range of services with them in mind has sprung up that you can make good use of to supplement your income.

We’ve picked six of the easiest ways to make money in the city to help you pay your rent or mortgage, or simply enjoy city life to the full.

Rent Out Your Home Through Airbnb

If you’re away for business or on holiday, you can use your empty home to generate extra income by renting it out through Airbnb or another website like Booking.com or HomeAway.

According to Airbnb management company GuestReady and using data from AirDNA, you can earn an average of £157 a night in London, €100 in Paris, €87 in Lisbon, 577 dirhams in Dubai and HK$897 in Hong Kong. These rates increase significantly in the high season.

You can find tips for increasing your Airbnb occupancy rate on the GuestReady website.

Become A Tasker On TaskRabbit

TaskRabbit lets you earn money by doing tasks for other people, such as assembling flatpack furniture or putting up shelves, that they don’t have the time or skills to do themselves.

It now operates in more than 50 cities across the UK, France, the USA and Canada. You can earn an average of £23 per hour in the UK, $35 in the US and C$32 in Canada.

Through the app, TaskRabbit lets you know about jobs you can do nearby and you simply select one you want to carry out. You then arrange the details with your client.

Rent Out Your Car

If you own a car, you can make money by renting it out to people in your area who don’t have a car.

There are a number of services that let you do this, including Drivy, which operates in six countries in Europe and the USA through car-sharing platform Getaround, and Turo in the UK, Germany, the USA and Canada.

You can earn an average of £30 a day with Drivy, either through Drivy Open where a device is fitted to your car so drivers can find and unlock your car using the Drivy app, or by meeting the drivers in person.

Rent Out Your Parking Space

Parking spaces are often at a premium in cities so, if you’re lucky enough to have one, whether it’s a driveway, garage or something else, you can make hundreds of pounds a month by renting it out.

JustPark is one service in the UK that lets you do this, with more than three million drivers making use of it across the country. It’s free to list your parking space and you can rent it out whenever you like and charge whatever you like, with drivers finding a space in their desired location via the app or online.

Become A Dog Sitter

Love dogs? You could make money by looking after or walking someone else’s lovable canine while they’re at work or on holiday, or if they need pet care for any other reason.

Through Rover, which now offers pet sitting and walking services in the UK and seven other countries in Europe as well as the USA and Canada, you could earn £25 a day or more for dog sitting at the owner’s house or up to £50 a night for looking after a dog overnight in your own home.

Become a mystery shopper

If you’re a shopaholic you can actually get paid to shop. As a mystery shopper you pose as a normal customer to assess the service you get and how clean and tidy the shop is. You could also be asked to look at a particular aspect of the products in the shop.

With a company like Market Force in the UK you can earn an average of £5 – £10 per assignment. You get reimbursed for the things you are asked to buy and can even keep some of them. You can’t earn a huge amount but your earnings could soon mount up if you take on assignments regularly.
