The moment may come at some point in your working life when you start thinking that you are not being paid enough for your job role. It can be difficult to know that your colleagues are earning more than you, or that the industry standard is much higher than you are being paid. However you can do something about this.

When you need help asking for a raise, you might not know where to start. The idea of walking in your boss’ office and asking for more money is a little scary, however it might be necessary for your life and your development in the company.

Timing

If you are going to ask your manager for a raise, you need to ensure that the timing is absolutely spot on. You need to choose a moment when your company is doing well and they are racking in the profits. If you decide to do it when the company is struggling, you won’t get the result you want. For example if you start seeing people being laid off and meetings about cutting costs, this could be a sign that it is not the right time to ask for more money.

Don’t Complain

It is hard knowing that you are struggling to pay your bills at home, but going into the meeting with a list of complaints and issues will not be the right way to approach the subject of getting a raise. Instead think of this like another job interview. Go in there with evidence of the work you do, positive examples of your love for the company and the reasons you believe that you deserve the extra pay. This will gain you much more respect and your employer is more likely to take you up on your proposal.

Prove The Extra Work

If you come into work every day and simply do everything that your job description says, and then you go home and wonder why you aren’t getting a raise, it is because you are doing the bare minimum for your job role. If you can show your employer that you are taking on extra tasks during the working week and give them evidence of the extra work you have been doing, you will be able to make a good case for being paid more than you do.

Don’t Make It Personal

Whatever you do, don’t make your case about the things you are facing in your life. You might be moving into a new house or having a baby, but this is nothing to do with how good you are at your job and should not be used as a reason for youto get paid more. Even though these issues will be at the forefront of your mind, they are not relevant. Keep it professional and focus on what you can do for the company, this will make it more likely to go your way and allow you to provide for your family without worrying about money anymore.
